Cork Folk Festival 1979-2024 Reeling Down the Years by William Hammond will be launched by Cllr Dan Boyle, Lord Mayor. The book is the story of Cork Folk Festival, it contains a chapter for each festival, the artists, groups and bands and a selected discography of Cork LP's, cassettes and CDs released from 1929-2024. Music and light refreshments. October | Wednesday 9 | 3.00 pm - 4.30 pm | Black History Month workshop with Jenny Mitchell Join award-winning poet Jenny Mitchell for a workshop about Freedom. Jenny Mitchell is currently the Inaugural Poet-in-the-Community at the British Library. She won the Gregory O'Donoghue Prize in 2022, and the Poetry Book Awards in 2021. In a world that seems increasingly chaotic is it even more important to think creatively about this elusive concept? What is Freedom and how can we attain more of it in a kind and responsible way? Jenny will offer inspiring poetry prompts in a relaxed but challenging atmosphere. This Black History Month workshop is open to all. New and experienced poets welcome. Maximum: 12 participants. Donal has won numerous awards for his fiction, among them the European Union Prize for Literature, the Guardian First Book Award and four Irish Book Awards and has been shortlisted for several more, including the Costa Book Award and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. October | At School with Dyslexia Celebrating Dyslexia Awareness Week, this exhibition contains enlarged versions of illustrations from the book ‘At School with Dyslexia’ by Cork based dyslexia expert Sascha Roos and Danielle Sheehy (Little Brown Books, 2024) It focuses on practical up-to-date help for children in secondary school. The large- scale drawings illustrate quotes from the students’ experience about how it feels to be dyslexic and the stresses that the education system puts on dyslexic children as well as the strengths that they have. Visitors are invited to add their own experiences with dyslexia to the Post-it board. October | Japanese Jazz The Rory Gallagher Music Library presents an exhibition on Jazz culture in Japan as part of a international collaboration between staff member Ben Hussey and visiting intern Misa Nakai. The exhibition details the phenomenon of Jazz culture in Japan - from its origins in visiting Jazz troupes in the 1920s to the cultural importance that the country’s Jazz Cafes hold today. October | Frederick Douglass This exhibition looks at the life of Frederick Douglass, his visit to Cork and his connection to Ireland. October - November | Mary Elmes - I got things done This exhibition looks at the life of Mary Elmes. Marie Elisabeth Jean Elmes was an Irish aid worker credited with saving the lives of at least 200 Jewish children at various times during the Holocaust, by hiding them in the back of her car.

October | Paintings By Barry Dawkes & Eileen O’Sullivan Artists Barry Dawkes (Castletownshend) and Eileen O’Sullivan (Blarney) have, over the last 10 years, mounted exhibitions of their work at Bishopstown Library and MTU School of Music. Their work is mainly in watercolour and pastel, but they also use oil, acrylic and charcoal. October | Reflections on the care experience in Cork A thought-provoking installation of poetry and art from children in care, children who foster and foster carers themselves. This exhibition launched on Culture Night 2023 in Douglas Library and returns for the first two weeks of October.

October | Connections The annual World Mental Health Day is on 10 October with the overall objective to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health and well-being. To co-inside with this, Tory Top Library, Ballyphehane Togher Community Development Project, Shine A Light Suicide and Mental Health Awareness Group are collaborating in bringing a mental health and well-being information display to Tory Top Library. This exhibition will provide our community with vital information and supports available across the city, and it will encourage all local communities to have the open conversation on mental health.
