The highly anticipated Irish Historic Town Atlas of Cork will be available in late May. This new historical atlas of Cork explores the city from its origins to the present day. The emergence of Cork from a monastic settlement on a marshland site through to the thriving city we know today is explained in a thoroughly researched text, illustrated with newly created thematic maps, early views and photographs. A gazetteer of over 13,000 sites and accompanying essay gives the detailed topographical history of the city up to c. 1900. The Irish Historic Towns Atlas of Cork is published by the Royal Irish Academy in association with Cork City Council. Maps are produced in association with Ordnance Survey Ireland. A Digital Atlas of Cork/Corcaigh was released in December 2023 that contains 6,245 historic sites on layers of maps in a Geographical Information System (GIS). It is free to search and available at https://www.ria.ie/digital-atlas-corkcorcaigh. The print version of the Atlas will be available in all branches of Cork City Libraries this Summer. The digital version of the map is available on any of our public PCs during opening hours.
